Peaberries make up less than 5% of coffee harvest, so you know you're in for a treat! This coffee grows on the slopes of Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania and is always high on our go to list for stronger chocolaty dark roasts. With very forward and apparent flavors, this coffee is rich and full bodied with a nice balance of nuances in the cup; chocolate liqueur, candied orange, and spice. This roast is for our strong coffee fans or those who like to add a splash of milk or cream.

About the region: Our new crop of Tanzania Peaberry is sourced from family owned farms located in the Mbinga district, Ruvuma Region, Tanzania. Ruvuma is one of the southern-most regions of Tanzania bordering Mozambique and Lake Nyasa which is one of the African Great Lakes.
What is a peaberry? Inside a regular coffee cherry you’ll find two seeds. The seeds of the coffee cherry are what is removed, processed, and roasted as coffee "beans". Peaberries occur as a result of a natural mutation inside a coffee cherry, where one ovule fails to pollinate. This results in extra space for a single developing seed. Peaberries are estimated to make up to around 5% of a harvest. They are then sorted and separated during the post-harvest process. It’s sometimes believed that because the single bean of a peaberry does not need to share nutrients between two separated beans, it has a superior flavor profile.
About the label: The artwork for our new Tanzania Ruvuma Peaberry was created by local high school senior, Bryndis Maw. She has helped us out in the shop since we first opened and we could think of no one better to create this label. She's an amazing artist and an all around great person. Thanks for being a part of this coffees journey Bryndis!
